Sedation Consent Information

Please note that;

1. Gem Equine can accept no responsibility in any circumstances for an injury to the horse that may occur as a result of deficient workmanship or otherwise by an Equine Dental Technician if the EDT is employed directly by yourself.
2. It is your responsibility to check that any EDT used by yourself to treat your horse is properly qualified and has appropriate insurance cover. You should seek documentary evidence of this.
3. It is against the law for an EDT to perform any form of extraction of teeth other than wolf teeth. Such procedures may require antibiotic and analgesic treatment that can only be provided by a qualified Veterinary Surgeon.
4. The British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA) provides training and examinations for EDT’s. You should ensure that any EDT working on your horse has obtained this BEVA qualification.
5. A sedated horse can never be considered totally safe. It might behave unpredictably at any time. Sudden arousals can occur without notice or in exaggerated response to stimuli that would otherwise be tolerated. Sedated horses may stumble, even fall, and they remain able to kick, barge rear etc. Only experienced and competent persons, who are aware of the risks, should handle or be near sedated horses.
6. The practice will charge per unit time of attendence in addition to drug administration and costs etc. For charging rates and estimates please contact the practice. We advise that the Veterinary Surgeon should remain with the horse for the duration that the procedure requires sedation. If you decline to accept this advice, the practice will not be held liable for any loss or damage of any kind that might otherwise not have occured.
