What is Gait Analysis?

Equine gait analysis is a method used to study and evaluate the movement and locomotion of horses. It involves the systematic observation and measurement of a horse’s gait or the way it moves, both at rest and during various activities such as walking, trotting, cantering, and galloping. Gait analysis is important in the fields of veterinary medicine, biomechanics, and horse training, as it can provide valuable insights into a horse’s overall health, performance, and any potential lameness or musculoskeletal issues.

Gait Analysis using Sleip

Sleip combines video with precise equine biomechanic data points. The Sleip application, which uses the camera on a mobile phone to capture the horse’s movements. The Sleip app provides us with the flexibility to run examinations quickly and practically anywhere. The video recording is uploaded and analysed by Sleip’s AI-powered software. The results are ready and displayed in the app within minutes, including stride-by-stride analysis video with synchronised biomechanical data.

A typical gait analysis examination using the Sleip application will include:

• Trot the horse back and forth twice in the same recording.
• Trot the horse away from the camera for about 30 metres (as for a visual exam).
• Turn the horse around and trot back towards the camera.
• Repeat – record the horse trotting away and back again.
• When the recording is complete, the video is uploaded.
• The analysis is ready to view within a few minutes, depending on the internet connection.
