What is Gastroscopy?
Gastroscopy is a diagnostic procedure involving video endoscopy of the stomach. This advanced technique allows us to examine the inside of the oesophagus, stomach, and proximal duodenum. Using a high-definition camera, we capture live footage, photographs, and videos to highlight any problem areas or monitor improvement over time following treatment.
Why is Gastroscopy Performed?
Gastroscopy is primarily used to diagnose Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome (EGUS), a common condition that can affect a horse’s health and performance. Horses with EGUS may exhibit:
- Poor performance or reluctance to work
- Reduced appetite or picky eating habits
- A dull or poor-quality coat
- Discomfort when being groomed, tacked up, or ridden
- Mild colic symptoms
- Behavioral changes, such as irritability or reduced willingness to engage
Gastroscopy allows us to visually identify ulcers, assess their severity, and pinpoint their type and location. With this detailed insight, we can develop a tailored treatment plan to address your horse’s specific needs effectively.

How is Gastroscopy Performed?
At GEM Equine Ltd, we use state-of-the-art mobile gastroscopy equipment, enabling us to perform the procedure conveniently at your yard (if suitable facilities are available) or in our newly refurbished clinic.
- The horse is lightly sedated to ensure they remain calm and comfortable throughout the procedure.
- The endoscope is gently passed through the nose and swallowed, allowing it to travel down the oesophagus into the stomach.
- The stomach lining is carefully examined, and any abnormalities are documented.

Preparation for Gastroscopy
To obtain clear visuals of the stomach lining, it must be empty during the procedure. This means your horse will need to fast overnight. We schedule most gastroscopies for morning appointments to make the fasting process as straightforward as possible.
When you book a gastroscopy with us, we’ll provide a detailed leaflet outlining pre-procedure feeding and care guidelines to help you prepare.
