Faecal Egg Counts

Ensure Your Horse’s Health with Our Faecal Egg Count Service

At GEM Equine Ltd, we understand the importance of keeping your horse healthy, happy, and free from the risks associated with parasitic infections. One of the most effective ways to monitor and manage your horse’s parasite load is through regular Faecal Egg Counts (FEC). Our Faecal Egg Count Service is designed to provide you with accurate, timely information to help you make informed decisions about your horse’s worming program.

What is a Faecal Egg Count?

A Faecal Egg Count (FEC) is a diagnostic test that measures the number of parasite eggs present in a horse’s manure. This test helps identify the type and level of parasitic infection, allowing for targeted treatment. By regularly monitoring your horse’s FEC, you can avoid unnecessary worming, reduce the risk of parasite resistance, and maintain optimal health and performance.

How Our FEC Service Works

  1. Sample Collection: Take a pinch from at least 3 dung balls. Place the sample in a zip-lock bag and remove the air and lable it with your horses name, your full name and date of collection. Samples should be less than 12 hours and not have been frozen.
  2. Sample Droff Off: Samples are to be dropped off in the red post box at Kennels Farm, Off Forge Row, Codnor Park, Ironville NG16 5PE or given directly to one of our vets. Please complete the online faecal egg count form when you drop off the sample.
  3. Sample Analysis: Once we receive your sample, we will analyse it using Micron Kit FEC technology to precisely count the number of parasite eggs present in the sample.
  4. Results and Recommendations: You will receive a comprehensive report of the findings, typically within 24 hours. Our vets will provide personalised recommendations based on the results, and a parasite treatment plan for your horse if required.

Benefits of Regular FEC Testing

  • Targeted Worming: Avoid unnecessary treatments by worming only when needed, reducing the risk of developing drug-resistant parasites.
  • Cost-Effective: Save money by avoiding over-worming and purchasing unnecessary products.
  • Improved Health: Maintain your horse’s overall health and performance by effectively managing parasite levels.
  • Environmental Responsibility: Reduce the environmental impact of chemical wormers by using them sparingly and only when necessary.
