While we always strive to use medications specifically licensed for horses in the UK, there are clinical situations where a licensed product may not exist or may not be the most effective option for a specific condition. In these instances, veterinary surgeons follow a regulated decision-making process known as “The Cascade.” This legal framework, governed by the Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD), allows us to ethically and safely prescribe alternative medications—such as those used for different species or human medicines—to ensure your horse receives the highest standard of care when specialised options are limited.
